Piese de Pavel Kohout

ARTHUROVO BOLERO
A witty and rigid comedy inspired by Arthur Schnitzler´s La Ronde with Maurice Ravel´s Bolero as a tag. The play pays attention to human sexuality, which now by itself can hardly cause the same scandal as it did in times of Austrian potentate. Sex as a theme no longer has the taste of forbidden fruit. It rather becomes a fake in loveless marriage or a way of manipulation. Nevertheless we can find tenderness and true love in this promiscuous network. Arthur´s Bolero first opened in June 2004.
Fool's Mate
"Piesa lui Kohout este scrisă cu ironie, subtilitate şi umor negru. Există o anumită nebunie tragi-comică în reacţiile tuturor personajelor din acest spectacol. Dramele reale se amestecă cu ridicolul situaţiilor, minciunile cu adevărul, şi numai astfel "jocul vieţii" devine complet." (Felix Alexa)
Jocul regilor
Povestea unui triunghi amoros (soţul, soţia, amantul) peste care trecutul continuă să planeze...
Nuly (in English - Nulls)
The plot is set in public toilets in 90´s, when Czech society was disordered after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. Characters of this play are typical representatives of new after revolucionary social classes – nongraduated lawyer Jarda raises as a keeper of the toilets, trencherman Tonda organizes beggarly maffia, the old toilet keeper recovers her courtesy title. They all look forward happy future. But nothing goes in such easyway. Big dream decays.
Such a Love
The play is primarily for those, who every day assume the right to turn the fates of others into a drama, without ever feeling obliged to understand them or recognize them at least for a second as their own. For those that immediately cast off undergone tragedies in order to forget them tomorrow, that even begin to prepare new tragedies the day after tomorrow.” (Pavel Kohout)
The Widow Killer
A detective story set in World War II Nazi-occupied Prague.
Ubohý vrah (in English - Poor Murderer)
Although it has an undercurrent of political allegory- not surprising in view of the fact that the author is a Czech- Poor Murderer is not primarily a "political" play in any traditional sense, though it does contain such lines as "You can't drown humiliation. You can only pay it back." "With what?" "With revenge." It is set in the "great hail of the St. Elizabeth Institute for Nervous Disorders" in St. Petersburg, Russia. The time is 1905 and an actor who has been playing Hamlet imagines he has actually killed Polonius, who has in real life married the woman the actor loves. Is he imagining it? Has he perhaps really committed the crime? If he can prove he is insane, he will escape punishment. And so he sets about doing so through a form of psychodrama, with its flashbacks to the events leading up to the supposed crime. Within its almost Pirandello-like framework, this leads to some surprising, results.
